A 2-in-1 comic book and story-creation workbook by Tim Powell designed to teach young artists how to make their own comics.

Features the complete 8-page adventure of Walter the Walrus Worker, followed by 19 pages of sound effect challenges, dialogue fill-ins, character design labs, brain-teasing mazes, and a frameable Master Comic Artist Certificate.

What It Is

How-To Draw Comics: Featuring Walter the Walrus Worker is a 27-page interactive children's activity book and comic creation guide. It combines an exclusive 8-page finished comic story with 19 pages of hands-on educational workshops. Readers follow Walter a giant, well-meaning walrus trying his best to navigate a human desk job through a slapstick office adventure, then step into the role of co-creator. The activity pages teach core visual storytelling principles, including panel layout, speech bubble dialogue, sound effect lettering, character outfit design, and background setting construction.

Why It Was Created

The project was born out of a practical challenge: designing a tangible, high-value takeaway for a massive summer teaching tour consisting of 38 one-page comic classes across 14 schools. While a one-hour workshop sparks immediate enthusiasm, young students routinely want to keep drawing after class ends. This book was built as an educational "summer bridge" that turns a single classroom session into weeks of screen-free creative play, giving students a structured sandbox to practice writing, drawing, and character building at home.

The 2-Month Sprint

Bringing the book from initial concept to a published product in under two months required a major strategic pivot. The original plan was to self-publish the standalone 8-page comic. However, discovering Amazon KDP’s 24-page minimum requirement for standard print-on-demand titles created a hard deadline constraint before the late June class rollout. Rather than rushing to draw new story pages, the project was re-imagined as an interactive activity book:

  • Content Development: Expanded the scope by drafting an educational curriculum for ages 6–9, translating professional comic terminology (gutters, panels, narration boxes) into kid-friendly lessons.

  • Illustration & Design: Created dedicated art activity pages including Walter's "Casual Friday" outfit challenge, a sound effect splash page, and a Walter's weekend setting challenge engineered specifically for marker and crayon coloring.

  • Production & Distribution: Formatted the 8.5" x 11" layout in high-resolution digital tools, managed KDP premium color specifications, proofed print samples, and built a zero-inventory, direct-to-parent print-on-demand sales pipeline in under 60 days.
